The Department of Earth Science's EQ-1 Seismograph

The Department of Earth Science at Rice University maintains an EQ-1 Seismograph System, which is designed to detect the vertical components of seismic waves generated by earthquakes and other events. The EQ-1 instrument is located on an isolated pad in the seismology lab in order to reduce background noise. The EQ-1 can detect magnitude 3.5 earthquakes at a distance of 150 km and larger events anywhere in the world.

The EQ-1 Seismograph System recorded the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Java, Indonesia, on September 2, 2009.
It took 19 minutes for the P-wave to travel from Indonesia to Houston.

For more information on recent earthquakes, please visit the USGS site at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/.
